Job Summary:

The Department of Patient Advocacy at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Patient Advocate / TH Senior Staff Assistant. The successful candidate will:

  • Report to the Chief Experience Officer proactively on relevant, serious issues requiring immediate action.
  • Act as a greeter in the main hospital lobby, to welcome patients and family members to the hospital and assist with directions to visit patients and clinic appointments. 
  • Assist in the facilitating patient flow in the Emergency Department by helping ED staff resolve complaints and address patients concerns in the moment. 
  • Screen employees, vendors and visitors daily.
  • Serve as a liaison between patient, family members and staff, to resolve issues.
  • Assist with helping patients find clinic appointments and patient visitations.
  • Answer incoming calls regarding patient complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Investigate and respond to patient/family member complaints promptly. 
  • Document patient complaints in the Complaint Tracking System.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for adhering to the compliant management process for prompt resolution.  
  • Serve and protect the UHD community by adhering to policies/procedures and professional standards.
  • Educate patients about their rights, as needed. 

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Familiar with computer systems and basic Microsoft Office.
  • 2+ years of work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Associate Degree preferred.
  • Work experience in a health care setting preferred. 

Work Schedule:

Variable Days; 8:00am to 4:00pm

Salary Grade/Rank:

SL-3

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
