Job Summary:

The Department of Perioperative Services at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking an hourly/per diem EKG Associate, Pre-Admission Testing. The successful candidate will:

  • Be responsible for assisting the Registered Nurse in the observation, analyzing and documentation of rhythm strips on all telemetry patients.
  • Ensure the monitoring equipment is clean and functional at all times.
  • Coordinate repairs with the Associate Director of Nursing/Nurse Practitioner and SMIC.
  • Communicate pertinent information about a patients current medical status and changes in rhythm by continuous interaction with nurses and other relevant disciplines.
  • Collaborate with the registered nurses, instruct patients, family members, hospital personnel regarding the purpose and function of the procedures and equipment being utilized.
  • Participate in patient care activities under the direction of the registered nurse.
  • Perform quality assurance glucometer checks as a protocol for unit assignment and complete finger stick as instructed by the registered nurse staff.
  • Assist with phlebotomy sticks as instructed by the registered nurse staff.
  • Participate in continuing staff development activities.
  • Transport patients to procedural areas with the registered professional staff and return patients to their admission unit.
  • Identify and order necessary unit supplies based upon patient care needs.
  • Prepare and complete 12-lead EKG's on patients, as instructed by the registered nurse.

Required Qualifications:

  • Certification in Phlebotomy and EKG.
  • 2+ years of experience in a hospital setting, preferably in an Ambulatory Surgery Unit.
  • Must be able to perform EKG's.
  • Employees must complete BCLS certification within 6-months of employment.

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
