Job Summary:

The Department of Anesthesiology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Nurse Anesthetist. The successful candidate will:

  • Perform complete pre-anesthetic assessment which includes review of electronic health record and pertinent patient history and physical including significant laboratory data and other tests performed in preparation for the surgical procedure. 
  • Be aware of and fully comprehend history, physical, and laboratory data.
  • Establish good rapport with patients; anticipate needs and possible problems; take initiative and functions independently when appropriate.  
  • Work cooperatively with supervising Anesthesiologist, Residents, Surgeons, Nursing and all Operating Room staff. 
  • Consistently review patient ID upon receiving patient, name and DOB.
  • Respect patient rights and be HIPAA compliant.
  • Arrive on time for anesthetic preparation and appropriately prepares for Case Management.
  • Assemble all essential equipment in an orderly manner; have equipment ready and in working condition to safely administer anesthesia.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of surgical cases and anticipates anesthetic needs and possible problems. 
  • Use universal safety precautions, applies infection control measures and complies with medication management hospital policies.
  • Appropriately prepare for anesthetic management; plan of care is developed in systematic manner based upon assessment, interpretation and anticipated procedure; recognizes patient difficulties; communicates information clearly and logically with Attending Anesthesiologist.
  • Display knowledge of current anesthetic principles in selecting anesthetic techniques; checks all equipment and monitors prior to providing anesthesia according to recommended policies.
  • Demonstrate professional competence in managing anesthetic care; appropriate airway management; exhibit safe and comfortable technical ability; recognize problems and takes appropriate corrective action (including seeking consultation); demonstrate good judgment in emergency situation; provide patient with safe and comfortable anesthetic; aware of surgical events taking place.
  • Keep accurate record of pertinent information; adapt with composure to changing situations.
  • Coordinate care of the patient with appropriate health care providers; ask for help when necessary according to escalation policies.
  • Provide competent post anesthetic management; verify with the PACU RN the patients first and last name on the ID bracelet; maintain patient airway; during transition to the PACU, demonstrate vigilant care maintaining the patient's airway and physiological needs; provide full report to recovery person; complete all records; evaluate and resolve patient pain status.
  • Appropriately dispose and/or waste all medications and syringes according to hospital policies and maintains equipment as necessary.
  • Adhere to hospital and departmental policies. 
  • Report to work on time and responsibly. 
  • Manage patient records, paper and electronic, and medications as required by the Anesthesiology Department and hospital policy. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master of Science Degree.
  • Current New York State Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • CRNA Certification or CRNA certificate with letter qualifying to sit for the National Boards (with confirmation of graduation from the program director).
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS certification.
  • New York State Infection Control Certificate.

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
